God, Guns, & Newtown

I tried not to blog about the massacre in Newtown, but the amount of ridiculous drivel pouring out into the blogosphere regarding God and guns compelled me to say my piece.

Christians, please refer to Matthew 6:5-6 in which Jesus says, “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Prayer in schools is idiotic and will not save us from future tragedies like this.

Even if we disregard the thousand reasons why prayer in schools is un-American, exactly how would that stop another Newtown shooter?  He was home schooled, so it wouldn’t have helped him in any way.  I’m sure lots of the victims and their families prayed regularly at home and died anyway.  I’m an advocate of prayer, but not for stopping mass murderers.

Cradling your guns and hiding out in a survivalist compound won’t help either.

I’m a self defense and preparedness advocate who was an armed guard in the 1980’s and who owns two pistols (that are locked in a safe at all times).  But note that the shooter’s mother “was a survivalist, [who had] turned her home into ‘a fortress’ in which she was stockpiling guns and food to prepare for what she believed was an apocalyptic event associated with impending economic collapse.” (from Wikipedia).

There is no magic bullet that will stop the murdering bullets.  What’s wrong with the world is way too complicated to solve with penny wisdom and a 1950s mindset.
