About

Welcome to my virtual office.

I am the founder and First Elder of Cabal Fang Martial Arts, President and Chairman of Cabal Fang Temple, Inc. (a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt, non-profit educational charity), an ordained interfaith minister and a deacon in the Old Catholic tradition enrolled in Ekklesia Epignostika in pursuit of Holy Orders with apostolic succession.

The spiritual focus of Cabal Fang martial arts is Hermetically Christian and Perennialist. That is to say, it is focused on the common symbols and themes found in all the world’s religions and philosophies since ancient times but which find their fullest representation in Christ Logos.

My written works include fiction and non-fiction. My most popular non-fiction works are The Calisthenics Codex and Cabal Fang: Complete Martial Arts Training Manual from Querent to Elder (available as a paperback or ebook). My fiction includes the novels Chatters on the Tide and Ghilan, as well as numerous poems, ‘zines, comic books, and short pieces. My short-story “Sign of the Times” appears in the Fall 2012 issue of the Hulltown 360 Literary Journal.

I have been a martial artist for over thirty years. In 2011 I was awarded the rank of Master by the Combat Martial Arts Practitioners Association and in 2020 became an Affiliate Coach of Frontier Rough ‘n’ Tumble under the legendary Mark Hatmaker.  I graduated from the University of Virginia in 1983 with a B.A. in English.

My wife and I are the proud parents of four children and five grandchildren.

  1. I have read The Cabal Fang Manuel on my nook. Your words have deeply inspired me and my wife. We will be registering as an order soon. Continue to inspire…we will be working hard.

  2. (Co) Incidentally, I have a post on mysticism.

Hey Robert, I nominated you for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award! Sorry for the late notification! I’ve been really busy and the internet in China isn’t all that great, but here’s the link 🙂

  4. Hi Robert,

although Christmas isn’t part of my belief system, I recognise that it is a time in the West when people drop their guards to some extent, shake hands, embrace, show generosity and draw closer – however temporarily.

I’m all in favour of these so, seizing the moment (I process this as the violins and carols on the radio behind me soar with impeccable timing to a peak at midnight) and contributing my bit, I wish you a Very Happy Christmas and an Excellent New Year!

    Pleasure to know you, sir!

    • Thank you so much Phil! Not just for your holiday wishes, which are deeply appreciated, but also for asking difficult questions, challenging the status quo, and for generally raising the bar of human discourse. One of these days my wife and I’d like to make it to your neck of the woods. When we do, you best put on some strong coffee my friend, because we’re going be all night in conversation! Kindest wishes to you and your family.

  5. I was wondering about that incredible Billy Jack Freedom School t-shirt. Do you have any idea where I could get one? My fiancé showed me the Billy Jack movies when we started dating three years ago, and I’m crazy about it.

    • I’m sorry, I bought it about 15 years ago from a martial arts supply company and they don’t make them anymore. I wore that thing until it fell to pieces! Please let me know if you find one — I’d buy a new one myself!

  6. Hi… How are connected with Frank Mitchell?
