Life: A Magical Arte (and a riddle)

My June article — “Life: A Magical Arte” — is up at Pagan Pages.

The title of my monthly column is Oak-corns & Apple-thorns, and it’s a reference to a two-part riddle I wrote which goes, “Which is the tree that bears the corn, and which the apple that wears the thorn?”

Do you know which two North American plants answer the riddle?  Can you figure out how they might be somehow related?

Slowing Down the Waterfall

You’re a goal driven person.  You maintain focus on what matters, cut away superfluous activity, stick to the plan.  Goals are met and things achieved.

Then one day you realize that life is happening somewhere out there instead of right here, that life’s water is slipping over the dam.

Slow down the waterfall.  Take a minute to stand still and experience the flow.  Breathe.

Re-evaluate the goals later.  For now, just be.  Think about absolutely nothing.

How Many Hours in a Life?

This is your life, and it’s running away from you.

I was out walking the other day and train went by.  As I watched it receding into the distance I thought, “There I go.”

The older you get the faster time flies.

At age 51, two-thirds of the way through my life expectancy, I’m just starting to figure out what life’s all about.  Only one third left.

With this last third, I want to do something that counts.
