I’m Much Better with Pens and Paintbrushes

I’m much better with pens and paintbrushes than I am with computers (here’s a picture I did while painting with the grandkids yesterday). So that I can keep up with all of my social profiles and have an identity on “the twitter” I’m trying out Hootsuite. If my posts look a little wonky, come up multiple times, etc. give me a break while I climb the learning curve.

Yes, folks who practice Savate (a.k.a. French Boxing, French Foot-fighting) practice in shoes (males are called savateur, females savateuse).

Watch the video below and you’ll see how a champion savateur uses his hands and feet in unison, setting up punches with kicks and vice versa to create mind boggling combinations.

Many of the kicks of Savate are incorporated in Cabal Fang, and we’re practicing them this month at the Order of Seven Hills.  If you want to move like the guy in this video you’re going to have to put in many hours of practice.  And you could start by joining us.

During the Kidney Walk today I stumbled across this marker for the site of the original Manchester Masonic Temple #14 here in Richmond, est. 1795. It housed the first school for the deaf in the United States, says the marker.

Someday I hope there will be a marker to commemorate our achievements at the Order of Seven Hills

Sandy puts climate change back in the conversation – The Washington Post

Washington Post Article

I had forgotten this moment from the debates back in ’88. “The greenhouse effect is an important environmental issue,” the aspiring veep said, and “it’s important for us to get the data in to see what alternatives we might have to fossil fuels…Therefore,” concluded J. Danforth Quayle, “we need to get on with it.”

Antiscience Beliefs Jeopardize U.S. Democracy

Thanks to my son for pointing me to this must-read article at Scientific American.  It explains the history behind the current state of affairs — climate change denial, vaccine phobias, the ‘marriage of industrialist money with fundamentalist values,’ etc., and explains the dangers it poses to us all.

Reading the article I wonder, as I have many times before, why people like me (occultists and practitioners of alternative religions) are so pro-science.  I have friends of almost every alternative stripe — Occultists, Voodooists, Wiccans, you name it — and they seem much more pro-science than the mainstream.  How can believers in magic ally with the enemies of ‘magical thinking?’  And yet I very rarely find climate change denial and opposition to stem cell research among the alternative crowd.

I don’t worship science or believe that we can ‘science our way out’ of climate change because I think population growth and social issues will outstrip scientific reductions in carbon emissions.  But denying the validity of science isn’t helping anybody.

Ghilan: Free for 24 Hours

My novel Ghilan is now available in the Barnes & Noble Nook eBook Store.  I’m so excited that I’m giving it away free for the next 24 hours at Smashwords.com.  Use discount code QY42F.

As mentioned in a previous post, the first person who reads Ghilan and can answer the trivia question “What is Sellie’s father’s first name?” will win the original hard copy working draft of the book.

Happy reading!

Halloween Martial Arts

Being interested in both martial arts and occult matters, I searched for news related to both.  This article turned up.

It looks like a fun event for the kids, but I wonder what Mas Oyama, Gichin Funakoshi, or Johannes Liechtenauer would say if they could see this kind of thing.

Maybe I take things too seriously, but events like this don’t seem to be in the true spirit of Halloween or in the true spirit of martial arts, and I wonder if they might be a disservice to the children.  I’m not completely sure, but sure enough that I decided to stop teaching martial arts to kids back in 2000.

If I was going to host a martial arts event for Halloween, it would be somber event for adults, perhaps a workout followed by a meditation on the those who have fallen in defense of others.

Jack Parsons: Rocket Scientist and ‘Silly’ Man?

Interesting article on Jack Parsons.  The author thinks Jack was a silly man, and by extension, that occultism is silly.  Although I can see why a skeptic might find Mr. Parsons silly,  I disagreed that Occultism is silly and took issue with the author’s logical fallacy of accident.  Hilarity ensued.
