Next Writing Project?

My view of the side table from my favorite chair

“What should my next writing project be?” he thought from the comfort of his favorite easy chair…

I know I should capitalize on the (relative) success of Ghilan and write a sequel.  But then, the free eBook Chatters on the Tide is being downloaded 7:1 over Ghilan, so maybe I should write a sequel or prequel to that one instead?  I also have a non-fiction book on calisthenics that I could knock out if I wanted to, and I haven’t submitted any non-fiction articles or short stories lately, which I could also do.

So, loyal readers, what should I do?

1. A fiction novel tying together Chatters on the Tide and Ghilan,

2. A non-fiction book on calisthenics for solo and group practice,

3. Some Non-fiction articles you’ll probably never see because nothing seems to sell, or

4. Some short stories that you’ll probably never see because they don’t fit into popular genres and they don’t sell either.

How Many Hours in a Life?

This is your life, and it’s running away from you.

I was out walking the other day and train went by.  As I watched it receding into the distance I thought, “There I go.”

The older you get the faster time flies.

At age 51, two-thirds of the way through my life expectancy, I’m just starting to figure out what life’s all about.  Only one third left.

With this last third, I want to do something that counts.

First Review of Ghilan Isn’t Awful

Amy Brantley over at A Girl and Her Kindle just read Ghilan and didn’t hate it.

That’s a relief!

Quick Candle Ritual 101

It’s amazing what you can get done with a candle, a scrap of paper, and a little ink.

So it was 7:00 am and I had a busy, stressful day ahead.  I guess most folks would have an extra cup of coffee, make an ironclad To-Do list, and get on with the day.

But I’m not like most folks.  I had the coffee, made the To-Do List to end all To-Do Lists, and then got out a candle, a scrap of paper, and my quill pen.

On the paper I wrote, “I will maintain focus on goals and objectives.”  I then put the paper under the candle and took a seat on my prayer stool facing the candle (prayer stools are the best thing since screen doors — I made my own but you can buy one or improvise.  While traveling I usually flip over the hotel ice bucket and use that.  I’m not kidding).  I then spent ten minutes looking at the candle and imagining that my desire for total focus was being sucked up by the candle and beamed out into the universe along with the candlelight.

I had a great day.  Did the Universe hear my plea?  Or did I just self-hypnotize myself into being totally focused on what I had to get done that day?  Does it really matter as long as it works?

Well, I think it kind of does.

Partly because the Universe doesn’t give a crap if I live or die, fail or succeed, unless I do.  But mainly because a Universe that hears me if I take initiative and approach Her respectfully is a much more pleasant place to live than a dead Universe that cannot hear.

I do this kind of stuff all the time.  Try it — it’s fun and it works.

Back to Basics

Park benches are almost as good as massage chairs

Stress.   It comes from all over the place.  For me it’s been building since I started writing Ghilan earlier this year.  Writing a novel in 90 days can kill you.  Add to that the stress of caring for an elderly parent and increased stress at work, including travel, and you get DEF-CON 1.

Normally I spend a lot of time in contemplation, meditation, and prayer, but since the book launch I’ve been spending mornings and lunch breaks trying to promote the book.

About a week ago I realized that I need to get back to basics: meditating or contemplating daily and spending Sundays doing as little as possible.

I feel better already.
