Big News + IMT: Cabal Fang Training Involution #154

Cabal Fang attends Karate College 2019

For the first time ever, CF will be going to Karate College as a group.  Register here, send me an email, and roll with us!  Camp costs $219 and dorm rooms are only about $35/night.  Karate College is the best martial arts camp in the country, and it’s three days of non-stop action!

Cabal Fang Helps Revive Community Park

This is where we train. May not look like much, but it’s been the home of CF for ten years, and we love it.

The defunct civic association that owns the park where we train here at CF HQ is coming back to life and Cabal Fang is going to be a part of the plan.  The first official meeting of the new association will be on May 20th, 2019.  Yours truly will be at that meeting to volunteer for a seat on the board.  For the last ten years we’ve been the only folks who cared enough to haul off trash, cut grass, and deter vandals.  Our energy will continue to flow and evolve in concert with this new initiative.

Planning Begins for Cabal Fang 10th Anniversary Event

Try a 3-mile run with an auto tire sometime — what fun!

October will mark the official 10th Anniversary of Cabal Fang.  If memory serves me, we started meeting in April of 2009.  But the first monthly constitutional we have on record is from October, and you know the rule: “If it ain’t in the training log, it didn’t happen.”  We’re still spit-balling, but the idea that has come up several times in the past is some kind of tire run that will be open to the public.  Watch this space for details.

Now for the T.I.

IMT: Cabal Fang Training Involution #154

IMT stands for “Individual Movement Technique.”  In a nutshell, moving target acquisition takes 3 to 5 seconds.  To avoid getting shot, pop up, sprint as fast as you can for 3 to 5 seconds, then hit the dirt.  Wash, rinse, repeat.  This one comes straight from the mind of Mark HatmakerClick here for instructions.

Here’s a selfie from the knees down after finishing my half-mile Commanche-styled IMT mud run in a pathetic 15:20. A three-legged pregnant yak could’ve done it faster. But it was fun, and at least I wasn’t sitting home eating potato chips.

Super Cool News: Pentagons, Coffee, Islam, Bernie, and a WOD

First a magnificent miscellany of super cool news:

Now for your Cabal Fang workout of the day, one that’s a little more of a slow burn than the usual all-out ball-buster (I told you I was going to dial down the intensity a little).

PTDICE Half Pyramid‡ to 9 of: Steam Engines, Fist Push-ups, Back Crunches, Zombie Squats, Staggered Push-ups, Twisters, Regular Squats (this should take about 19 minutes).

Heavy Bag Half Pyramids: 5 x 3:00/1:00: Each round complete as many sequences as you can of 1 punch, 2 punches, 3,4,5, etc. up to 9 followed immediately by 1 kick, 2 kicks, 3,4,5, etc. up to 9 (dis-including the last 1: 00 break, this will take 19 minutes also).

See the training DVD in the background?  I had the chance to train with Mssr. Dubreuil a few years back and it was a real treat. He’s a wizard with a stick and a true gentleman.

A Half Pyramid is 1 of each, 2 of each, 3 of each, etc. up to the max count. A Half Pyramid to 9 is a total of 45 exercises. Where p = the peak, the formula is p(p+1)/2.  In this case, that would be 9(9+1)/2 = 45.  Math is super cool.

More Climate Drama

I had planned to take my teenager and attend the Forward on Climate Rally yesterday, but on Friday when I saw that the weather forecast at that time was for rain and snow, I decided to scrap them.  It turned out to be sunny, and by noon yesterday I was kicking myself for not joining in.

Since I was home I watched UP with Chris Hayes.  Members of the panel said they thought that Americans are starting to wake up and realize that they are being lied to — by the happy fracking ads, the gulf-is-all-clean-now propaganda, and the Koch-funded KXL-is-good-for-America hogwash.  I disagree.

I think that the people who really care about the environment are just getting more and more frustrated and pissed off.  While it is true that politicians in Washington are starting to mention climate change, and as Chris pointed out, fifty years from now nobody is going to care how big the deficit is, I think most people are still bored by the climate change discussion.

Mindy McCready, the Pope, Oscar Pistorius, and the Russian metor are topping the news charts, not climate.

I guess the destruction of the planet isn’t the kind of drama that most people can really sink their teeth into.
